The Central Biorepository Shared Resource (CBSR) was established to serve as a critical institutional resource for the banking, archiving, and distribution of biospecimens collected from basic and clinical research. Its overarching mission is to enable investigators to securely bank, archive, and inventory existing and future samples with accompanying detailed phenotypic data. In addition, the CBSR provides comprehensive services for biospecimen collection, processing, and shipping. Through these services, the CBSR promotes increased access to non‑clinical and clinical biospecimens across a broad range of disciplines and bridges interaction within and across individual laboratories.
To meet this goal, the CBSR provides the following services:
Informatics – Secure electronic tracking and cataloguing of biospecimens in LabKey® from acquisition through archiving and distribution.
Long‑Term Storage – Banking and inventory management of biospecimens under cryogenic (-190°C) and ultralow (–80°C) climate-controlled conditions.
Processing and Testing – Tissue and blood processing, DNA/RNA purification, quality control (QC), and quantification.
Shipping – Local transport of biospecimens and controlled‑temperature shipping.
Administrative Support – Guidance for investigators, including standard operating procedures (SOPs) and standardized language for grant applications.
